colour names returned by <code>colors()</code>); numeric indices into
<code>palette()</code>, or hexadecimal strings in the form <code>"#RRGGBB"</code>, where
<code>RR</code>, <code>GG</code>, and <code>BB</code> are pairs of hexadecimal digits
representing red, green, and blue components, in the range <code>00</code> to
<code>FF</code>.
