The power of matrices lies in their\nability to organize network-wide calculations, thereby simplifying the\nwork of analysts who study entire systems.\n\nBut [wouldn’t it be\nnice](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wouldn%27t_It_Be_Nice) if there were\nan easy way to create `R` data frames whose entries were not numbers but\nentire matrices? If that were possible, matrix algebra could be\nperformed on columns of similar matrices.\n\nThat’s the reason for `matsindf`. It provides functions to convert a\nsuitably-formatted\n[tidy](https://tidyr.tidyverse.org/articles/tidy-data.html) data frame\ninto a data frame containing a column of matrices.\n\nFurthermore, `matsbyname` is a sister package that\n\n- provides matrix algebra functions that respect names of matrix rows\n and columns (`dimnames` in `R`) to free the analyst from the task of\n aligning rows and columns of operands (matrices) passed to matrix\n algebra functions and\n- allows matrix algebra to be conducted within data frames using\n [dplyr](https://dplyr.tidyverse.org),\n [tidyr](https://tidyr.tidyverse.org), and other\n [tidyverse](https://www.tidyverse.org) functions.\n\nWhen used together, `matsindf` and `matsbyname` allow analysts to wield\nsimultaneously the power of both [matrix\nmathematics](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matrix_(mathematics)) and\n[tidyverse](https://www.tidyverse.org) functional programming.\n\n## Installation\n\nYou can install `matsindf` from CRAN with:\n\n``` r\ninstall.packages(\"matsindf\")\n```\n\nYou can install a recent development version of `matsindf` from github\nwith:\n\n``` r\n# install devtools if not already installed\n# install.packages(\"devtools\")\ndevtools::install_github(\"MatthewHeun/matsindf\")\n# To build vignettes locally, use\ndevtools::install_github(\"MatthewHeun/matsindf\", build_vignettes = TRUE)\n```\n\n## History\n\nThe functions in this package were used in [Heun et al.\n(2018)](https://doi.org/10.1016/j.apenergy.2018.05.109).\n\n## More Information\n\nFind more information, including vignettes and function documentation,\nat .\n\n## References\n\n
